About Department

The Department of Sanskrit is dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotionof the world’s most ancient and rich language tradition. Sanskrit,oftendescribedas the mother of many Indian and world languages, is not only the carrier of India’s timeless cultural and philosophical heritage but also a key to understanding various disciplines such as literature, grammar, linguistics, philosophy, logic, astronomy, mathematics, medicine (Ayurveda), yoga, architecture, and fine arts.

At the postgraduate level (M.A. Sanskrit), the Department focuses on imparting advanced knowledge of classical and modern Sanskrit literature, Vedic studies, darśanas (Indian philosophies), poetics (Alaṅkāraśāstra), dramaturgy (Nāṭyaśāstra), and historical as well as comparative linguistics. The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between traditional learning methods and modern research approaches, enabling students to interpret, analyze, and apply the wisdom of Sanskrit texts in contemporary contexts.

The Department also emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, encouraging students to explore the relevance of Sanskrit in fields like Indology, archaeology, computational linguistics, comparative literature, Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), and cultural studies. Regular lectures, seminars, manuscript studies, workshops, and research projects enrich the academic environment, preparing students for careers in teaching, research, translation, cultural preservation, and related fields.

With a vision to nurture scholars who can uphold the values of truth, harmony, and knowledge embedded in Sanskrit literature, the Department continues to serve as a bridge between India’s glorious past and its progressive future.

Aim

To preserve, promote, and propagate the rich heritage of Sanskrit language, literature, and philosophy by providing advanced knowledge, research opportunities, and interdisciplinary applications, thereby nurturing scholars who contribute to cultural, academic, and social development.

Objectives

  1. LinguisticMastery–TodevelopdeepunderstandingofSanskritgrammar, linguistics, and philology for accurate interpretation of classical texts.
  2. Literary Appreciation – To study and critically analyze Sanskrit literature including Vedas, Upanishads, Epics, Puranas, Kavyas, Natakas, and philosophical works.
  3. Research Orientation – To cultivate research skills in Sanskrit studies with emphasis on manuscripts, commentaries, and interdisciplinary approaches.
  4. CulturalPreservation–Topreserveanddisseminatethecultural,ethical,and spiritual values embedded in Sanskrit texts.
  5. Interdisciplinary Linkages – To explore connections of Sanskrit with fields like Indian philosophy, Ayurveda, Yoga, Astronomy, Mathematics, Linguistics, and Indology.
